Humpty Dumpty

posted in Kids Stuff, Quirky by puzz1ed1 |

Contrary to popular opinion, Humpty Dumpty was not an egg, but a cannon, used in the English Civil War.

‘Humpty Dumpty’ sat on the wall besides St Mary’s Church until a Parliamentary cannon destroyed part of the wall, causing ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to fall. The “Kings Men” (aka Royalists, Cavaliers) attempted to put the cannon back on another part of the wall but, due to the weight, they could not “put Humpty together again”

Very interesting! However, are there not 3 Ns in ‘cannon’ ? – or did you mean one of the following:

* a rule or especially body of rules or principles generally established as valid and fundamental in a field or art or philosophy; “the neoclassical canon”; “canons of polite society”
* a priest who is a member of a cathedral chapter
* canyon: a ravine formed by a river in an area with little rainfall
* a contrapuntal piece of music in which a melody in one part is imitated exactly in other parts
* a complete list of saints that have been recognized by the Roman Catholic Church
* a collection of books accepted as holy scripture especially the books of the Bible recognized by any Christian church as genuine and inspired
(With grateful thanks to Mr Google!)

Thanks for that. Gives it an interesting twist, and can think of a couple of canons I’d like it to be ;-)
