Egg Conundrum is Cracked

Sky News: Chicken And Egg Puzzle Is Cracked

Eggs came firstA geneticist, a philosopher and a chicken farmer claim to have finally solved the age-old question: What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Apparently, it was the egg.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Professor John Brookfield, a specialist in evolutionary genetics at the University of Nottingham, said the pecking order was clear.

The living organism inside the eggshell would have had the same DNA as the chicken it would develop into, he said.

"Therefore, the first living thing which we could say unequivocally was a member of the species would be this first egg," he added. "So I would conclude that the egg came first."

Fellow "eggspert" Professor David Papineau, of King's College London, and poultry farmer Charles Bourns agreed with the verdict.

Mr Papineau, an expert in the philosophy of science, reasoned that the first chicken came from an egg and that proves there were chicken eggs before chickens.

The debate was organised by Disney to promote the release of the film Chicken Little on DVD.

Up the Amazon

Several people have asked what they can buy Samuel recently.  Often hard to think of things at the time, so we're keeping a 'wishlist' on Amazon.  There's a selection of stuff on there that, if you wanted to, you could buy and have sent straight to us… cool, eh?!  Don't feel obliged to, though, we won't hold it against you ;)

Monday Mutterings

Monday morning's been and gone.  Not a good one.  In fact, one of the worst for a while so surely the rest of the week can only get better now :)

Two trips to the Dr and one to the Hospital, but still no closer to any formal diagnosis.  Until then I'm off work for another 4 weeks.

Samuel's teething again, so a tad grizzly, but enjoying his new toys…. photos soon…. He's getting frustrated being a baby now and wants to sit, stand, walk, eat, and more.  He quite likes Soleros thoughSurprised

Hev's been at work, but really not with it.  OK, so maths has never been her strong point, but a triangle with two lines of symmetry that form a cross?  Hmmmm….

Have a date for the funeral now – next Thursday – so now just need to help sort everything that needs sorting… assuming I can stay awake: am falling asleep in the middle of the day more and more at the moment Undecided

Made a few tweaks to the blog system, including adding an option to take pity on us and send money by PayPal.  Not expecting everyone to do that, but someone asked the other day, so now the link is there in case anyone else wants to.. we don't mind ;)    Will add an affiliate link page soon, too, as we get commission on several sites if you take their services.

Have a good week, and if you see a Womble let me know

Without You…

Sung so many songs about you
Said so many times I love you
Thank you for the way you make me feel
I was lost and you found me
I was blind and you healed me
Helped me see that this is all for real

Without you I wouldn't have a prayer
Without you I wouldn't even
To take a step or breath
without you

May I never lose the wonder
It's like summer in Decemeber
Thank you that you mean
all this to me
And it's hard now to remember
Life without you
Did I ever live
before you set me free

Without you
I wouldn't have a prayer
Without you I wouldn't even dare
To take a step or breath
without you

You're the reason
life's all it's meant to be
I don't want to live
if you can't be with me

We'll never see it happen again, so make the most of this one…

The time, for a whole 1000 milliseconds, in the early hours of tomorrow morning will be:

01:02:03 on 04/05/06

how cool is that?!

Think I need to get out more
